21st October 2026: Workshop: Navigating publishing as a new(ish) author. University of California, Merced (in person). Targeted toward authors publishing their first or another early paper (i.e. mostly current graduate students, though others welcome too). Panel discussion with faculty from disciplines that publish primarily in journals from engineering, natural sciences, and complex systems. More information.

Join us for a candid panel conversation that makes the case for Diamond Open Access. An equitable approach to scholarly publishing. It provides online access to research outputs with no fees for readers or authors, relying on shared infrastructures and open licensing (UNESCO). It’s free for everyone, why isn’t it the default?

A public webinar and panel discussion featuring editors from Oxford-affiliated diamond Open Access journals. What are the biggest benefits of the diamond OA model? What are the biggest challenges? How are developments such as AI affecting diamond OA and scholarly publishing? Where would you like to see diamond OA heading in the future?

20th June 2026: Evolution 2026, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
One day, two workshops, in-person at the Evolution 2026 meeting. In the morning, Part I: Navigating publishing as a new(ish) author, is targeted toward authors publishing their first or another early paper (i.e. mostly current graduate students, though others welcome too). In the afternoon, Part II: Effective reviewing and editing, is targeted mostly toward postdocs and recent graduates with several papers who are interested in getting more involved with additional aspects of publishing (though, again, others welcome to attend). The workshops are the first two in a series “Successful Biogeography Publishing as Authors, Reviewers, and Editors” we envision on career-wide #BetterPublishing.

06th January 2026: The International Biogeography Society (TIBS)
One day of workshops at TIBS’ meeting in Aarhus, 06–10 January 2026. The workshops are the first two in a series “Successful Biogeography Publishing as Authors, Reviewers, and Editors” we envision on career-wide #BetterPublishing. The first, in the morning, Part I: Navigating publishing as a new(ish) author, is targeted toward authors publishing their first or another early paper (i.e. mostly current graduate students, though others welcome too). The second, in the afternoon, Part II: Effective reviewing and editing, is targeted mostly toward postdocs and recent graduates with several papers who are interested in getting more involved with additional aspects of publishing (though, again, others welcome to attend).
31st July 2025: 67th IAVS Annual Symposium:
The International Association for Vegetation Science (IAVS) will host a symposium “Why should we publish in society-owned scientific journals?” An initiative growing from a 2023 editorial in Applied Vegetation Science.

Event 2. for senior professors, on the role of societies in changing publishing, and how we can move ahead without compromising the sustainability of societies and their journals.
