Scientific publishing, in a form similar to what we know today, has existed for hundreds of years. However, in recent times, the escalating Article Processing Charges (APCs) for Open Access (OA) publications have introduced unprecedented inequities into the scientific publishing ecosystem, challenging affordable and equitable access to research knowledge.
Here, we compile three recent perspectives or quantitative assessments on this and other interrelated issues:
1. Author-pays model: check out this perspective to better understand how rising APCs in OA publications can exacerbate growing inequities in global science.
2. Lack of transparency in APCs: how easy is to systematically track OA-related expenses? [details here]
3. How much does a US academic department spend on publishing? [details here]
