PEEER — Publishing for an Ethical and Equitable Environment in Research — has been a long time in the making. Months for some of us, years or decades for others. It has taken shape during discussions among colleagues and friends, in remote editorial team meetings, and around society board tables. We have worked previously to start up not-for-profit journals, support existing journals we like by submitting and reviewing and editing manuscripts, and collaborated and fought with for-profit publishers to maintain a rigorous author-focused, affordable and constructive, process. We have had successes and failures. The culmination of our experiences has brought us to this point. It is time for the research community to take back control of the way we share scientific information and to make it accessible to all. In the coming weeks, we’ll build out resources for authors, reviewers, editors, and more including announcements of events and ways to get involved. In the meantime, please read the joint statements by editors and by societies and reflect on how you can contribute to improving publishing. If you are an editor or society member please bring this to your leadership team and ask them to sign on (verbatim or to a variation thereof), then email us if you’re group is willing to be listed; our current practice is to list organizations rather than individuals. – peeer
